Issue #98: Life Tips Based on Brain Science
Hi Book Freaks! You may have noticed that this issue of the newsletter was sent through Substack instead of Revue. The reason for this is that Twitter, which owns Revue, announced that it would be shutting down the service by the end of the year. Now that we are on Substack, we’re going to start offering paid subscriptions. The newsletter will remain free, but paid subscribers will have access to comments, archived issues, chats, and other features to come. — Mark Frauenfelder
Here are four brief excerpts from Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina.
Improve your memory with emotions
“Emotionally charged events are better remembered—for longer, and with more accuracy—than neutral events.”
Connect the dots
“The most common communication mistakes? Relating too much information, with not enough time devoted to connecting the dots.”
Sleep on it
“Is there something to the notion ‘Let me sleep on it?’ Mountains of data says there is. For example, Mendeleyev — the creator of the Periodic Table of Elements — says that he came up with this idea in his sleep. Contemplating the nature of the universe while playing Solitaire one evening, he nodded off. When he awoke, he knew how all the atoms in the universe were organized, and he promptly created his famous table. Interestingly, he organized the atoms in repeating groups of seven, just the way you play Solitaire.”
Make those first 30 seconds count
“Public speaking professionals say that you win or lose the battle to hold your audience in the first 30 seconds of a given presentation.”
